Remotes Stopped Working, LED Light Bulb Problems

LED LIGHT BULB PROBLEMS?

We have been to a few service calls already on this subject, So when i saw this post i thought it might My complement our blog. 

My remote garage door opener stopped working. We have a Chamberlain HD900D Whisper Drive garage door opener. At first I thought from the master wall control that the 'lock' button had been activated which 'locks out' the remote control of the unit. I troubleshot this for about 3-days.
I stood underneath the garage door opener with the remote and it would work. I went into the driveway 30 ft away and it would not work. Aww, the CR2032 remote battery needs to be changed after 5-years of operation - done... Now, it's fixed~!
Not so fast. Next day pulling into the drive way with the garage door lights illuminated (newly installed LEDs, mind you). Nope, nothing - neither remote from either car will work. The remote key pad which is also RF will not work. It must be something else - not my LEDs? Really... a google search tells me my 315 Mhz garage remote operates in reality around 288 Mhz and I find that the LED bulb circuitry operates from 30 - 300 Mhz. (read: problem is not with the LED lights but the LED circuitry within the LED bulb)
So, off to the garage I go. LED lights on - no remote working. LED lights off - garage remote work. Standing in the drive-way 50 ft away. Lights OFF, RF garage door opener works. Lights on, RF remote will not work...
Not just the lights within the opener, powered by the garage door power unit, but also the adjacent garage lighting with LEDs also interferes with the garage door remote...~!
So, YES there is LED interference that will render your 315 Mhz RF garage door inoperable~! Be forewarned.

How often do you use your garage door? Even if you open and close it only when you're leaving for work or coming home, that's a total of approximately 500 times per year. All that wear and tear puts a lot of strain on your garage door springs, which act to counterbalance the door and hold it in place. If one of these springs breaks, you are stuck ... literally ... until you can get it replaced. Worse, malfunctioning springs are dangerous to cars and, scarier still, to humans.

About Garage Door Springs

Springs maintain the equilibrium of your garage door, and are essential for its proper functioning and security. There are two types. Torsion springs, either singly or in sets of two, are used to hold a wide and/or heavy garage door (weighing 350-1000 pounds) in place. They are located on the wall directly above the door. Extension springs are used for smaller garage doors (usually 9' x 7' or less, or under 350 pounds) which are relatively lightweight. They are installed as pairs, one on each side of the door track.

The repair or replacement of a garage door spring is a complex task, which requires a great deal of expertise. If not done correctly, it will be hazardous to the safety of anyone using the door. The cost to replace garage door springs runs about $175-225, including labor, but will vary according to the size of your garage, the type of door, and your location.

This means that replacement of your garage door springs should be necessary after approximately 7-12 years, due to metal fatigue resulting from normal wear and tear.

Regular Maintenance

As with any piece of mechanical equipment, proper maintenance will both help garage door springs function and extend their lifespan. The springs, as well as the pulleys, bearings, and rollers, should be treated once or twice a year with a light silicone lubricant. Inspect them regularly for signs of wear.

When you need to replace your garage door springs, make sure that the correct size for your door's weight is installed. This will ensure smooth opening and closing, while it avoids damaging the opener. Even if only one of a pair of springs is broken, both should be replaced to ensure balanced tension. What's more, the two springs will have approximately the same lifespan, meaning that the other could break at any moment.

Winter is almost here, and you need to consider how safe your garage door is and if it will leave you locked out on a freezing, cold day. Nothing is more of a hassle than having your garage door stuck in the open or close position in the freezing cold weather!  The good news is with a few preventative maintenance tips you will keep your garage door operating all Winter long. Below are a few helpful tips to help get ensure your garage door is working as it should and can beat the colder weather.

1. Check the weather stripping on the garage door. This is the vinyl stripping around the top and sides of your garage door. Make sure that it is not dried out, cracking, chipped, or missing any parts. If so, contact a garage door professional to have it replaced at a low cost to you. This helps to seal the door when closed against any wind that may enter on the edges of the garage door.
2. Inspect your garage door rollers for any signs of damage. They should roll freely in the tracks and should not stick for any reason. If they look to be getting stuck or dragging on the track, they may need to be changed out. Grease in the tracks will thicken with colder weather and may cause the door to stick when the rollers are going up and down the tracks. This is also a fairly low cost repair that can be done by a professional garage door technician.
3. As I stated above, hardened grease can cause the door to stick. This will also put a strain on your garage door opener, causing it to work much harder to lift that garage door. You can help this by wiping down any old grease or debris in the tracks. Doing this will save you strain on the garage door motor and having to replace it down the line.
4. Make sure the cables are tight on each pulley. If you find that they are not, contact a garage door company for immediate service. This can be very dangerous and should not be done by you. The cables are tensioned by the springs and one wrong move could cause the spring to snap and hurt anyone around! Broken garage door springs occur more often in the Winter or colder weather. Continuing to operate your garage door on a broken spring will wear out the opener motor very quickly and will require the opener to be replaced, as well. Because the spring is the most vital part of your garage door system, it should be repaired or replaced by a professional only. Once again, this is very dangerous to do.
5. Just do a quick overall inspection on the garage door and garage door opener. If anything looks damaged, missing, or just suspicious call a professional garage door company to help you out.

      Having been in the industry for 15 years, I have had the opportunity to work for several companies in the market. As a service technician in this industry, most of the techs are paid off of commission, so the ability to up-sell can be a big advantage to them. I have recently opened my own company, Garage Doors Repairs & Installations, so you may ask me why I am writing this post. I believe in a fair price for a fair job like most people in this world.Unfortunately, it really makes me mad when I hear tales of crazy up-sells to uneducated customers. So if I can get just a handful of people to read this and educate them on a few of the basic up-sells,then I hope I have saved you a few dollars and a little bit of pride you may have lost after the fact.

      This is probably the easiest up-sell of them all. When you move into a new home, after living in it for a while, you will probably be tired of dealing with all the cheaper things the builders installed when they built the house. You will probably notice the garage door making a lot of noise because you haven't or didn't know how to maintain it. What you have to remember here is the fact that you have called a garage door company out to deal with the noise you are hearing.
     The technician will come in and let you know, immediately, it is because the garage door is a builder model door and you have the cheap, inexpensive, plastic rollers. They will tell you that the rollers need to be changed to a much quieter ball bearing roller.
 (see one of my earlier posts on different rollers)
     It all sounds good, but your missing the fact that when you moved in the door was new and quiet. All it needs is some lubrication to ease up all the joints on the door, in order to get the door running smoothly and quietly again. The cheap, plastic rollers are rated  by the manufacturer for that door and will run forever when maintained properly. Yes, they are cheap, but they work or they wouldn't have been installed with the door in the first place.

      On most builder homes, on new sub division houses, builders are putting in the cheapest doors they can lay theirs hands on at the time of the build. (everyone is trying to squeeze that last dollar). Usually, this means on a double wide garage door they put one spring on the door to lift it.
    Well once again, your friendly garage door technician comes in and tells you that you have the wrong spring on the door and you will need two springs instead of one. Obviously, double the price to change them out! Stop and ask yourself the fact question. It has been working like that for at least 7 - 10 years (which is what the average is for springs these days before they break).
   Why do I need two springs for this door if its rated for one when the manufacturer sold it to the builder?
That single spring is rated for the same weight as what the garage door technician would be changing out for two springs to do the same job for another 7-10 years. For example, if your door weighs 180lbs., that single spring has lifted the weight of that door for the last 7-10 years. The two springs used to replace the single spring would still be lifting the same 180lbs. for the same length of time.

You will want to press and hold down the program button inside the remote until the light on the remote control comes on. This is letting you know that your remote control is now in programming mode.

Next, you will need to access your motor located at the top of garage ceiling. Each garage door motor or opener has what they call a learn button. It is usually located at the back of the motor and may or may not be behind a cover that may need removed. Learn buttons can be purple, red, orange, or other colors depending on the make and model of your opener. 

Once you have located the learn button, you will need to press it once. Do not hold it down. You are now actively putting the motor unit in programming mode.

Decide on the remote control which of the two buttons you would like to use to open and close your garage door. Either one is fine. Press and hold that button for two seconds and release. Then press and hold it again for two seconds and release. Repeat this step until you see on the opener (motor) light flash at the ceiling. This has let you know that the motor has accepted the remote control.

Once the light has flashed, you may now take the remote control out of programming mode. To do this, just press the program button inside the remote control again to exit this mode. Replace the cover.

Now you are ready to test your remote. Your remote should now be ready to work with your opener and your garage door should open and close!
